Cycle Training July 2026
Congratulations to our Y7 cyclists who completed their Bikeability course on 14th and 15th July achieving Level 2. Pupils had to pass off-road cycling skills training before taking to the roads around school with their instructors to learn how to cycle safely in traffic and at road junctions. Congratulations to all 9 pupils who passed with flying colours.
Creating a Stumpery July 2026
St Gregory’s Year 9 Eco Committee worked with pupils from Claremont High School and Uxendon Manor Primary School today to help the Friends of Woodcock Park create the beginnings of a stumpery in the Park. Our enthusiastic young leaders moved logs and branches to the project site where they will gradually rot down and become home to many different invertebrates.
RHS Wisley July 2026
Our Eco Warriors visited the RHS flagship garden in Wisley, Surrey, where they learnt about sustainable gardening, plant reproduction and how plants adapt to different climates. They made wildflower seed bombs and took cuttings from herbs, after which they thoroughly enjoyed exploring the beautiful gardens and glasshouse.
Travel Ambassadors Visit London Transport Museum June 2026
On 23rd June, our Y8 Travel Ambassadors took centre stage at the London Transport Museum when they gave a presentation to other schools, plus a panel of experts from the transport industry, about our active travel initiatives and everything we have been working on this year. They also took part in a mini careers-fair and explored the incredible museum exhibits to see how London’s transport has evolved over time.
Eco Active Week June 2026
On 10th June, the Year 8 Travel Ambassadors organised a cycling skills competition for Eco Active Week. All competitors demonstrated some fantastic bike skills during what was a challenging course. Congratulations to everyone who took part, but in particular to Markos (Y7), Thomas (Y8) and Dominik (Y8) who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. A huge shout out to our local bike shop, Medbike, who donated some amazing prizes for our competitors and who came along to support the pupils and to repair and service their bikes throughout the event. Charity Plant Sale May 2026
St Gregory’s gardening club plant sale in May raised almost £160 for Whale and Dolphin Conservation, a charity with which St Gregory’s Eco Committee sponsors Indigo the dolphin, who swims off the shores of Scotland.
The pupils grew all the plants from seed and potted them on until they became big enough to plant out. The chilli jam was made from last year’s chilli harvest. A great achievement by our green fingered pupils.
Community Flower bed Renovation March 2026
St Gregory’s Eco Committee pupils successfully applied for funding from the Brent Environment Team to renovate an overgrown flower bed close to the school entrance. The pupils brought the community together by working in partnership with the Friends of Woodcock Park, Brent Parks Department and Brent Parks contractors, Krinkels.
After weeks of waiting for wet weather to subside, a community planting day took place on 11th March.
Great British Spring Clean March 2026
In March, our Y9 Eco Committee organised a community clean up of Woodcock Park in support of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean. Almost 100 people from local schools, businesses and community groups took part and in one hour they collected 36 sacks of rubbish.
Sea Life London Aquariam January 2026
In January, our Y9 Eco Committee visited Sea Life London Aquarium to gather information to support our Eco Schools Marine Topic. They learnt about the various threats to our marine eco system from global warming to over fishing and plastic pollution. They shared their knowledge with all pupils back at St Gregory’s by delivering a whole school assembly on the topic for Sustainability Month.
Air Pollution Investigation
In October, our Year 8 Travel Ambassadors investigated air quality along the roads around our school. They did this by examining lichens on trees, tar spots on leaves and taking samples of particulate matter on hard surfaces. They found evidence of higher levels of pollution at the cross-roads between Woodcock Hill and Kenton Road, where cars wait at the traffic lights. Fortunately, they found much less evidence of pollution on the roads directly adjacent to school and in Woodcock Park.
Purple 4 Folio October 2025
In the autumn term our 6th Form environmentalists worked with pupils from Uxendon Manor Primary School to plant 4000 crocus corms on a roundabout outside Uxendon Manor school. The crocuses were donated by the Rotary Club of Northwick Park to raise awareness of their Polio vaccination campaign. In the spring, the crocuses bloom purple, a colour which represents the purple dye placed on a child’s finger when they are immunised against Polio.
Top School For Travel
St Gregory’s Travel Ambassadors have won a TfL Top Schools Award for the “Best Campaign” in London. The TfL Travel For Life judges were impressed by pupils’ tireless campaigning to improve road safety near the school. Thanks to the students’ persistence, new road markings have been installed at a busy road crossing and a new scheme to install pelican crossings has been drawn up by Brent Council. This scheme is currently under consultation. Student Travel Ambassador representatives were presented with their award at the Travel For Life awards ceremony, held at the Kia Oval stadium in May.
Travel Team Achieves Gold
As a result of all the hard work of our Year 8 Travel Ambassadors, supported by our whole school community, St Gregory’s has been awarded Gold Accreditation by the TfL Travel for Life programme.
Pupils have demonstrated a 6% increase in walking and cycling to school since we joined the Travel for Life programme in March 2023. St Gregory’s also received an award in the Best Newcomer category.
Minimising car journeys to school helps to keep pupils safe by reducing air pollution and traffic congestion around our school. In addition, pupils who walk or cycle all or part of the way to school tell us they feel more alert and ready to learn.
