Library

St Gregory’s Library has always played an important role in shaping our students’ futures.  The Library provides a rich and diverse learning environment for the whole school community.  Our unparalleled teaching methods coupled with support from our school Library helps the students achieve their dreams and secure their future ambitions.

The Library is located in the Drum Building, has been completely refurbished and offers a bright and welcoming space on two floors with a study area, a computer area and a comfortable seating area for browsing books and quiet reading upstairs in the Library.  It is easy for students to access the Library from the playground and it is approached from the main School building via a covered walkway.

The Library has a vast collection of over 8000 fiction, non-fiction and reference books, online resources, audio books, magazines, revision guides and 11 computers to complement both the curriculum needs of the students and also to encourage reading for pleasure.

A number of students play a very important role in helping the Librarian to run the Library and to assist other students. They help by lending and returning books on the Library computer system, assisting other students to locate the books they want in the computerised Library catalogue and helping them to find the books they want on the Library shelves.

READING LISTS

Please find reading lists for students at the bottom of the page.

How are students expected to behave in the Library?

  • They must be sensible and responsible when using the Library and avoid disturbing other students
  • They must aim to keep the noise at a reasonable level so that others using the Library can concentrate on their own work and reading
  • They should always read quietly in the ‘Quiet Reading Area’ upstairs in the Library
  • They should put their bags and coats out of the way of other students so they do not take up space on chairs and tables or become a trip hazard
  • They should keep any food and drink to areas of the school where eating and drinking is allowed. Water is acceptable in the Library.
  • They must have any books they want to borrow stamped at the main desk before they leave the Library
  • They must return all books on time to the main desk so that other students may enjoy them afterwards. They should remember to have them renewed for longer if they haven’t quite finished them
  • They should always ask for help when they need it

The Librarian and Student Library Assistants will do their best to:

  • Be friendly and helpful at all times
  • Make sure that the Library is a pleasant and welcoming place to be
  • Help students to find the information, books or other resources they need
  • Make sure that a range of books on different topics and by different authors are provided for students’ use
  • Provide quiet areas for students to read and to study
  • Listen to students’ opinions and suggestions
