Welcome to the Special Education Needs homepage. It is the ambition of St Gregory's SEN department that each and every child with special education needs receives the help and support they need in order to reach their maximum potential in school and ensure a successful transition to higher education, training or work in their future.
Here at St Gregory’s we put many measures in place to ensure that every child is able to access the secondary curriculum. In particular, we ensure that the children who need extra support in the classroom have specially trained LSA’s attending their core lessons and providing differentiated classwork and homework for them. Our department also aims to provide a named teacher/LSA as a mentor to children who may need extra emotional support to improve their school lives.
Further support we provide includes:
The Reading Recovery programme which is run every morning to provide intensive help to children who are at a below average reading age. The programme aims to improve the ability to decode, to improve reading fluency and to improve comprehensive skills. Classes are run as small groups (7-8 pupils) helping to closely monitor and evaluate the child’s progress throughout the year.
Lexia is an addition programme we run to help improve the reading and spelling of pupil’s who are functioning below the desired level. This programme aims to reinforce phonetics using computer based activities. This lesson is also run every morning in a group of up to 14 pupils.
As well as extra lessons to help improve literacy, we also run Maths club every morning. This is an interactive session where lower ability pupils have the opportunity to build upon their maths skills. The rationale is to boost the knowledge, confidence and numeric skills of the students that take part. This helps students to breakdown the work they do in the classroom and to reach a level in which they feel confident in performing tasks.
Homework club is run three afternoons a week (Tuesday-Thursday) for an hour after school. This allows the children access to one-on-one support from the LSA’s to ensure their understanding and completion of all homework tasks.
